Plain Community Clinical Educational Series | Join Us Virtually!

May 6, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Free

A new educational series tailored for physicians serving the Plain community is here! This bimonthly, virtual learning series will occur every other month on the first Friday from noon – 1 p.m. The talk series is organized by a collaboration of WellSpan Health, the Clinic for Special Children, and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health.

The ABCs of the PIP—Using the Plain Insight Panel for screening and diagnosis

Clinicians who serve many people from the Plain Community will benefit from attending the Plain Community Education Collaboration’s next two educational zoom sessions on Friday May 6th and Friday July 8th.  These two sessions will discuss the utility of the Plain Insight Panel (PIP) which measures the presence of more than 1300 alleles for both autosomal dominant and recessive genes that have an increased prevalence in both the Amish and Old Order Mennonite population.

The first session—May 6, is presented by Amy Albright, genetic counselor at the Clinic for Special Children. Amy will focus on screening and diagnostic use of the PIP in the primary care setting:

  • Utility of PIP for both general carrier screening and diagnostic workup of a symptomatic patient
  • Knowing the patient–through detailed family history, learning the patient’s background (Amish or Mennonite)—and when to suspect genetic condition
  • Overview of the more common conditions seen in Amish and Mennonite populations
  • When PIP is not the most useful tool.

The July 8th session will focus on how the genetic counselors at the Clinic for Special Children provide individual analyses of these tests for patients and provide test results to the ordering clinicians. It will detail how to order the test and process the blood specimens.

Each session will include the presentation and time for questions from participants—promptly ending by 1 p.m. A Zoom link for the each program will be sent a few days prior.

The talk series can be accessed through the Zoom details below.
