Helge Hartung, MD
Dr. Helge Hartung joined the Clinic for Special Children in April 2024 in the newly created role of Physician-Scientist. He is a board-certified Pediatrician and pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist with two decades of experience in academic medicine. Most recently, Dr. Hartung was a faculty member of the Division of Hematology at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), the Director of CHOP’s Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania.
As the Clinic’s first Physician-Scientist, Dr. Hartung plays a vital role in implementing and overseeing investigator-initiated studies and sponsored clinical trials. He also participates as a member of the clinical team and provides compassionate care to families. He works closely with the Clinic’s Leadership Team to forge and cultivate external partnerships that align with the Clinic’s mission.
Dr. Hartung, his wife, and two teenage children enjoy traveling and outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and canyoning. He shares his home with two boisterous hound dogs and is an avid gardener and beekeeper.
Why are you passionate about the Clinic?
As the 34th member of the CSC family, I am inspired by the fact that our clinic is here to serve the community, as opposed to the community serving CSC. My goal is to leverage my longstanding experience in academic medicine so that our clinic can prosper and continue to grow its precious mission.
